A House Built for a Hero

Thirteen year veteran SSG Charles R. Landry, Jr. experienced 39 months of active combat. Among other things, his tour of duty included numerous firefights, vehicle borne IEDs, friendly and enemy casualities, and rocket attacks. The trauma Landry endured through his deployments had a significant impact on his behavior. After seeking out help, Landry was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, and traumatic brain disorder.

But Landry is a fighter and a hero…and he is determined to live a normal life, being the best husband to his wife Kathleen, and father to his beautiful daughter Aylani, son Tyree, and his third child expected in January. On September 4th during the Skeeters baseball game, together with Tilson Homes and Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land, Operation FINALLY HOME took a big step in helping make the Landry family dreams come true. As part of a surprise announcement, the Landry family learned they would be receiving a brand-new mortgage-free home built right here in Fort Bend County.

It all started on Veterans Day nearly a year ago, when Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land launched their “Buy a Truck, House a Hero” campaign at the dealership. For every new Silverado truck purchased, $250 of the purchase price went toward a house for a Fort Bend County-area wounded veteran. Classic Chevy owner Don Kerstetter says, “Each new truck buyer signed their name to our Wall of Honor. Together with our customers, we reached our goal of $75,000. I come from a military family and have done quite a bit of support for veterans and their families locally. We are proud to help the Landry family take the weight of a mortgage off their shoulders.”

Operation FINALLY HOME provides custom-built, mortgage-free homes to America’s Heroes and the widows of the fallen who have sacrificed so much defending our freedom. By uniting corporate sponsors like Classic Chevy and Tilson Homes, plus contributions from individuals and volunteers like all of us, Operation FINALLY HOME helps these heroes and their families transition to the home front by addressing one of their most pressing needs – a home to call their own. Construction of the Landry’s new home will be lead by Tilson Homes. This will be the fifth home Tilson has supported with Operation FINALLY HOME.
