Baseball is Everything

Sugar Land Skeeters BaseballBob Zlotnik has been involved in organized baseball since he was eight years old. An invited walk-on for the University of Texas, Bob then coached his own three boys through Little League and Select Baseball. Employed as a public accountant early in his career, Bob always knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur. He put together several business ideas, but didn’t have the guts to pull the trigger. “Then I worked for a couple of entrepreneurs,” says Bob. “And I thought, ‘Hey, I can do this!’ My wife Marcie is of the same entrepreneurial mindset, and together we started StarTex Power.”

Bob’s life was forever changed one day while reading the newspaper. “I read about a team coming to Sugar Land, and we started calling around to see what we could find out.” StarTex Power—shortly thereafter bought by Constellation Energy—purchased the naming rights to the field, and Bob and Marcie became minority owners of the Sugar Land Skeeters. Prior to last season, the Zlotniks became the Skeeters’ full owners.

“We had many unhappy sponsors and season ticket holders,” says Bob. “We started surveying customers to understand how we could enhance their ‘Skeeters experience.’ This is a family entertainment venue. Whether you’re a sponsor, hosting a picnic or birthday party or just bringing the family…you have a right to expect great service. We wanted to be associated with a place where people leave happy. Our new President, Jay Miller, is the best. He’s very customer-focused, and he knows every season ticket holder. If a customer is not happy, he works very hard to make them happy. What I’ve learned over the years is that some of our most loyal customers come when their issues are resolved. We’re all human, and we all make mistakes…but how it is handled and corrected can really make a person feel good.” Recent improvements at Constellation Field include higher quality concessions and improvements in service. Prior to last season, a poll revealed 80% of fans would come back or recommend a Skeeters game to their friends. Today that number is above 98%.

Giving back is a large part of who Bob is. Little League teams and charities can get rebates on Skeeters game tickets and even special jerseys that can be autographed by the Skeeters and put up for auction. Baseball started for Bob in his hometown of El Campo, TX. Today, El Campo Little League plays in a beautiful facility called Zlotnik Park. Bob and Marcie serve the University of Texas on many levels, giving time, energy, and money to the school. And in his spare time? Bob goes to a lot of baseball games! He says, “The best way to know how good your product is, is to experience it for yourself. We’ll see you at the game!”
