Honoring One of Their Own

Johnson Development—the award-winning development company that for more than four decades has set the standard for the nation’s finest master-planned communities—is honored to present this year’s Couture for the Cause at one of their newest Fort Bend communities: Harvest Green.

Couture for the Cause is the premier Fort Bend County affair benefitting The American Cancer Society. This year’s event, “Garden Glitz,” will celebrate and honor the life of longtime Johnson Development employee, Carolyn Williams. Carolyn lost her 13 year hard-fought battle with cancer on June 14, 2016. Johnson Development Co-President and COO Doug Goff says, “I have never seen a more courageous woman. No matter how she felt, or that she had been at MD Anderson for eight hours the evening before…she was at work with a smile on her face. She worked for Johnson Development for over 10 years, first at Sienna Plantation in many different roles and then at the corporate office. When other people would have given up, Carolyn always asked what she could do for you. It was never about her. We are all proud to have called Carolyn and her husband Allan friends.”

Evidence suggests that one can reduce their risk of cancer by making healthy choices like eating right and staying active. This correlation makes The Farmhouse at Harvest Green the perfect setting for Couture for the Cause. Harvest Green is Houston’s first farm-centric community. Chairman and CEO Larry Johnson says, “It’s a concept that’s taking root around the country. A ‘healthy living’ planned community with community gardens, optional resident backyard gardens, a Community Supported Agricultural Program, and a Farmer’s Market every week…plus lakes and waterways, greenbelts and open space, parkland and a walkable trail system.” For Larry, this “agri-hood” development experience brings him full circle. Larry grew up on a farm and raised crops in the Texas panhandle.

The highlight of Couture for the Cause is the fashion show, featuring couture models—many of whom are cancer patients or survivors—seizing their own opportunity to give back. Past models include Larry and his wife Suzie, both cancer survivors. This fashion show is selflessly produced by Lenny Matuszewski with hair by the team at Milagro Salons, makeup by LaDonna Marie of Sugar Land Face & Body, and clothing by Dillards. Guests enjoy food stations from area restaurants, plus a wine pull, Big Board auction, and “Baubles & Bubbles” raffle sponsored by Marlene and Samir Dharia of Plaza Jewelers. Visit the Couture for the Cause Facebook page and vote for your favorite 3D image of a custom Bauble to be made and raffled off the night of the event. 2017 chairs are Monique Bossett, Susan Ley-Novosad, Debbie Marcell, Michelle Royster, Margot Sayre and Gina Pizzini. Honorary chairs are Scott and KK West…the very first Couture for the Cause chairs back in 2009.
