Is a Big Wave Heading Your Way?

by Luke Worth

The Houston area has sure been through some sloshy conditions lately…setting floodwater records that the state is not likely to see again for quite a while. In the heroic style that is typical of most Texans, we witnessed daring water rescues, barbecue parties on rooftops, heart-warming stories of recovered pets, and of course neighbors doing damage control for other neighbors. Texas has proven once again that it can weather a crisis.

But what about preventable flood conditions that no homeowner wants to see…like a busted hot water heater? With so many of our hot water heaters in the attic…when a hot water heater bursts or leaks, the ensuing flood can be every bit as damaging as the damage we saw a few weeks ago. And since our area water is hard-grain, our water is corrosive…and a corroded hot water heater is one that’s going to rust right through…flooding your house. “Getting your water heater checked every year by a trained and certified professional is the best preventative medicine you can take,” says Alan Burkhalter, master plumber at Alan’s Plumbing. “In cases such as these, no surprises are a good thing. Many times we can save you a bundle down the line…especially if there’s a problem we are able to catch early on.”

Alan Burkhalter, his brother Chris Burkhalter, his wife Jennifer (the cheerful voice you hear on the phone), and their sons Luke, Beau and Jake have dedicated their lives to making sure your house and your family are protected. “In addition to getting your water heater inspected or replaced if needed…there are other small things you as the homeowner can do to prevent future flooding problems,” says Alan. “Turn off the power or gas to the water heater if you’re leaving on a trip…even if it’s just for a few days. No one wants to return to a flooded house. Also consider switching to a tankless water heater that provides hot water on demand. When the water is not stored, the risk of it flooding your house is greatly reduced.”

“A smart consumer is an informed one,” continues Alan. “That’s why we take the time to explain everything to our customers. So much of our business is repeat business or word-of-mouth. Every consumer’s trust award we’ve won is sacred to us, and it inspires us to keep going. Giving you the best service is not only our family business, but a point of honor. As your neighbors, we stand behind our commitment to great work at great prices.”
