A Tale of Two Studies

by Amy Sharp

Today more people work from home, kids have online homework and your “paperwork” is electronic. Steve Procter, owner of Procter Custom Woodworking, says, “We need to rethink home office design to work in today’s world. With laptops, wireless access, and cloud storage, you no longer need bulky furniture and filing cabinets. A slimmer design is more appealing and may create the perfect workspace…outside the home office. I’ve recently done studies for two different families. One converted a wall in a study to usable cabinets, and the other transformed the back half of a family room into a study with drawer banks and a standalone desk.”

Daniel of Missouri City’s hobby is woodworking. But when his wife wanted to build out a wall in the study, she wanted a professional to bring her vision to reality. David says, “I knew Steve from church. We had talked woodworking and I knew he would do an outstanding job.” Steve built tall painted cabinets with center file drawers and a lighted display shelf. “I wanted to do the lighting myself,” says David, “so Steve cut the holes and provided the lighting and let me do that part. I’m so impressed. The bottom cabinets are incredibly sturdy. Steve thought ahead, making the pull-out drawers fit both standard and legal drawer slides. Since it’s my hobby, I’m extremely picky…but Steve’s joints are tight and all is square. Excellent work!”

Lise in Oyster Creek wanted a small study for herself in the back of the family room, next to a window overlooking Riverbend golf course. Lise says, “I saw Steve’s impressive work in a local publication. During our consult, he listened to my ideas and took measurements. Steve sent me a design via email and we worked until it was perfect. He constructed it in his shop, then delivered and installed it here. I was amazed at how easy Steve made the process, and the end result is outstanding! I would absolutely recommend Steve for top-notch woodwork!”
