Tales from the ER:
St. Michael’s Saved My Father’s Life

When Susan Martinez, a local attorney at Hrbacek Martinez & Nestor, first met Dr. Shannon Orsak founder of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms through the Fort Bend Leadership Program, she never imagined how important he would be to her family. She says, “One night my dad started to sweat profusely. He told me, ‘I’m fine, I’m fine. I’ll just take a couple aspirin,’ but the sweating didn’t stop. I said, ‘Dad, I think you’re having a heart attack…you need to go to the ER.’ He was  a typical man…it took me almost an hour to convince him! My four-year-old daughter and I were actually sitting in the car with the engine running and I said, “We’re going to St. Michael’s Emergency Room and it will be weird if we pull up saying that you’re having a heart attack, but you aren’t with us.’ That worked!”

“On the drive over, I found Shannon’s number. He called back saying he’d prepped the staff…and when we arrived around 9pm they were ready, waiting and took complete control of the situation. St. Michael’s really protected my daughter. She was worried about her Grandpa, but they’ve got a waiting area that’s as comfortable as a living room. She sat with her Kindle and the television and they put her at ease. While they were running tests on my father, I was able to go back and forth and check on her. They were wonderful about constant communication and I always knew we were in good hands. Throughout the process, Shannon called to check in with me and follow up. You can feel how much he and his team care about you…it’s incredibly comforting!”

Did you know? Your insurance may require a different level of co-pay for a visit to a doctor’s office, an urgent care, or an emergency room. However, according to Texas law, if you THINK your symptoms will cause harm without treatment…that IS an emergency. And your insurance MUST pay in-network benefits at the ER of YOUR CHOICE whether the emergency room you choose is “in-network” or “out-of-network.” St. Michael’s is one of the few licensed, free-standing ER facilities with Joint Commission Accreditation, ACR certified radiology suites, and CLIA certified labs. They are in-network with AETNA and also accept more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. Dr. Orsak says, “Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year, St. Michael’s Emergency Room is ready to help you!”

“The tests confirmed Dad was having a heart attack, so St. Michael’s immediately found him a Coronary Care Unit bed at a local hospital. From the moment we arrived to the time they transferred him by ambulance only took an hour and half. The transition was absolutely seamless and so easy. Dad was already in his hospital room by the time we walked through the doors…and it was funny, we had to walk right through the hospital’s emergency room. Seeing the crowds of people and the chaos there made me so thankful we had gone to St. Michael’s!”

“Since then, Dad’s had a triple bypass and he’s doing well. He tells everyone, ‘You have to go to St. Michael’s!’ I really appreciated the speed with which we were treated, the calm environment, their excellent communication, and how caring they were. I’m sure St. Michael’s saved my father’s life!”
