“All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth”

by Sarah Warburton

From sweet babies with no teeth at all to teenagers with a mouthful of adult teeth, Dr. Bianca Sanchez of Little People’s Dentistry wants all her patients to smile with confidence. She says, “I love to see how thrilled my little friends are when they lose a tooth and get a visit from the tooth fairy…but as a pediatric dentist, I find every stage of development exciting!”

When your baby is born, twenty primary teeth are waiting to erupt through the gums. Dr. Sanchez says, “Usually girls are a little ahead of boys in cutting teeth and losing them, but the first tooth will probably erupt between six and nine months of age. As soon as that first tooth appears, it can start developing plaque. I recommend starting by cleaning baby’s gums with a little finger brush or washcloth…for good hygiene and good habits!”

Those last baby teeth don’t fall out until middle school…so take good care of them! Dr Sanchez says, “Until your child can write in cursive, you’ll need to help with brushing. It just takes more dexterity than young children have. And as soon as teeth are lined up and touching, begin flossing. I often lay my kids down on the bed while I brush and floss them, so I can really see all angles of their mouth. If you don’t, you’ll miss what’s going on with those back teeth! Brush at least twice a day and floss once a day…so those baby teeth will fall out naturally and your child will learn good dental habits for a lifetime!”

Just like Santa’s little elves, the Tooth Fairy and her friend, Dr. Sanchez, have surprises up their sleeves for good little boys and girls…and their parents, too! Dr. Sanchez says, “Our patients can enter our coloring contest for a chance to win our monthly prize, a $25 Toys R Us gift card or the big annual prize, a Kindle Fire. And remember to visit our website for Tooth 101 (you can learn when and in what order your teeth will come in) and games. Happy Holidays from Little People’s Dentistry!”
