Calling All Fashionistas!

by Amy Sharp

“To assist survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children, achieve safety and self-sufficiency while striving to prevent violence against women.” That’s the mission of our very own Fort Bend Women’s Center. Joy Dowell, Director of Pennywise, the resale centers benefiting the Women’s Center, shares some of the wonderful programs where both yourself and your children can aid in this mission.

Do you have a young adult that loves fashion and needs service hours? Joy says, “Our Junior Fashionista Board is a fantastic opportunity for students to earn service hours and learn retail skills. Enrollment is now open for young fashionistas ages 16 to 21, and includes quarterly fashion shows where the members of the board get to walk the catwalk!”

Or are you the fashionista…always on the lookout for upscale stuff at rock bottom prices? “We are launching www.thriftingfashionista.com in mid-November,” says Joy. “From the comfort of your home, you can treasure-hunt luxury handbags and bling, boutique baby items and health and wellness items. We’ve done the sifting for you. The site will only feature high-end, top-notch items. And of course all proceeds benefit the Women’s Center!”

With holiday gift-giving fast approaching, there’s certain to be someone on your list that has everything! Could you make them something unique? Joy says, “Our Holiday Crafting classes are about treasure-hunting, recycling and repurposing. We’ve already got Nov. 12 and Dec. 10 on the schedule with more dates to come. You’ll be surprised what you can make when you repurpose! Grab your girlfriends and give our crafting classes a try…it’s free!”

As you might expect, the Women’s Center depends on your donations. Give with the confidence that your items are directly benefiting people in Fort Bend County. Joy says, “This year, close to $100,000 of our retail merchandise at Pennywise will go directly to our clients. The rest supports the programs and services we offer. Your donation is a gift to a neighbor in need.”
