Raise a Roof, House a Hero

Many of our veterans often return home wounded, jobless, and in need of a little help from all of us they were protecting. Through the sale of new trucks, Don Kerstetter, owner of Classic Chevy Sugar Land has pledged to raise $75,000 for veterans right here in Fort Bend County. Don says, “When Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land’s drive ‘Raise a Roof, House a Hero’ has reached its goal pledged to OPERATION FINALLY HOME, our check will supply seed money toward a fine new home in Fort Bend County for one of our deserving wounded veterans.”

On this past Veteran’s Day, November 11th, wounded veterans from the Houston area gathered at Classic Chevy Sugar Land to share their stories of hope and healing…and how receiving a mortgage-free house from the national non-profit OPERATION FINALLY HOME changed their lives. Wounded veteran retired Sgt. Alexander Reyes said, “I’m the first one in my family that can call myself a homeowner. This is the best thing that could have happened to us!”

“Combat veteran and amputee USMC Lance Cpl. Ceontre Shelton couldn’t be with us today,” said Daniel Vargas, retired Tech Sargent USAF and Vice President of Family Matters and Community Outreach of OPERATION FINALLY HOME.  “But this month he’s moving into his mortgage-free house supplied by sponsors recruited by our organization. He plans to become an auto technician and get on with his life…thanks to this hand up from the community!”

The truck you buy at Classic Chevy Sugar Land will benefit wounded veterans here in the Fort Bend community. Don says, “Our Wall of Honor lets each new truck buyer sign his or her name and know that $250 of the purchase price of a new Silverado truck will go to OPERATION FINALLY HOME for a house for a Fort Bend County-area wounded veteran. We will continue this drive until the end of the year when we anticipate handing over a check for a minimum of $75,000—donated by our customers!”

OPERATION FINALLY HOME provides custom-built, mortgage-free homes to America’s Heroes and the widows of the fallen who have sacrificed so much defending our freedom. By uniting corporate sponsors like Classic Chevy Sugar Land, builder associations, builders, developers, and contributions from individuals and volunteers like all of us, OPERATION FINALLY HOME helps these Heroes and their families transition to the home front by addressing one of their most pressing needs – a home to call their own.
