Taking Care of Warriors

St Michaels Emergency Rooms
OSt Michaels Emergency Roomsn one harrowing day in the line of duty, Stafford Police Officer Ann Marie Carrizales took two bullets at point-blank range (including one to her face!)…and still managed to chase down the alleged gunman! Almost eighteen months later, she needed to go to the emergency room. “I had just gone back on patrol,” says Ann, “and it was hard. I had been shot during a routine traffic stop, so going back to work triggered some anxiety attacks. But I had worked through them and got back to duty. Now I had a raging fever, sore throat and cough…yet I dreaded another ER visit. Just remembering being wheeled in with the gunshot wounds could trigger an anxiety attack. I delayed going for an entire week.” Finally, a friend suggested that Ann seek treatment at St. Michael’s Emergency Room. “She convinced me that it wasn’t a typical ER…and it was operated by supporters of law enforcement.”
.
“When I walked in I was amazed,” says Ann, “St. Michael’s is gorgeous, warm, clean and comfortable…not cold and uninviting like most hospital ERs. I saw Dr. Ferguson who diagnosed me with bronchitis, he took great care of me and the entire visit was fast and easy.”
.
But it wouldn’t be Ann’s last time at St. Michaels. She says, “Shortly afterwards, I developed a rash on my nose, so I went back to Dr. Ferguson. He diagnosed me with shingles and I began treatment. What happened next floored me! Dr. Shannon Orsak (the co-founder of St. Michael’s) contacted me personally to follow up. By this point, my nose was twice the size it had been. Dr. Orsak asked me to send a picture. He recommended that I come back in, because it looked like my shingles had developed a skin irritation called facial cellulitis. When I got back to St. Michael’s, they were expecting me and everything I needed was ready and waiting. I’ve never been so impressed with a group of doctors in my life…and I’ve seen a lot of great doctors!
.
“I believe in St. Michael’s 100%,” says Ann. “I will never choose to go to another ER. I wish the family of doctors there could be my regular doctors. They are doing it right, and I recommend them to everyone!”

St. Michael’s is one of the few licensed, free-standing 24-hour ER facilities with Joint Commission Accreditation, ACR certified radiology suites, and CLIA certified labs. They are in-network with AETNA and also accept more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. Dr. Orsak says, “Our namesake, St. Michael, is the patron saint of warriors and all who take care of people in an emergency. We are honored to care for Ann, a true warrior and local hero!”

At this time St Michael’s, due to governmental bureaucratic decisions, is unable to participate in Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.
