Walking Beside Families Every Step of the Way

The Ferguson family is a tight-knit group. Many of them live within minutes of each other in the same neighborhood. Two generations work in the family business together. They were already close, but in the face of difficult times, they became even closer.

In 2025 and 2026, the four Ferguson brothers (Steve, Alan, Neil, and Scott), their wives, and their children dealt with tremendous emotional loss. The brothers lost their mom, Gwen, in March 2025, followed by their dad, Ross, in January 2026.

It was during the time right after Gwen passed that they learned just how much she had done for her husband. “My mother-in-law did it all. It took a team to do everything after she passed,” says Steve’s wife, Shannon. Luckily, they found that team with the caregivers at Pax Et Vita Hospice & Home Care.

Alan’s wife, Jody, says, “Our text group was called Team RF – the entire family and team of caregivers from Pax Et Vita were on it. We valued them tremendously. We felt extremely blessed to have them in our lives.”

“Dad was physically perfect before the onset of dementia, but he just could not get over losing mom,” Steve says.

Shannon continues, “Ross was very sad, and the team would visit, keep him company, help him take his medications, and even walk his dog. They spent enormous amounts of time with him. They would take him to appointments, followed by lunch at his favorite restaurant for fish and chips, and they were also tech support when he needed help with his TV.”

“They were an extension of our family for close to a year. My dad just needed someone to talk to every day,” Alan adds. “The caregivers from Pax Et Vita were his companions. As time went on, we added more and more hours with Pax Et Vita to be sure he always had someone there and didn’t get depressed.”

“I don’t know what we would have done without them. Ross fired the team daily, but he could not push them away,” Jody says. “Leslie (from Pax Et Vita) did things on the weekends, even on her off hours. She cared so much about him and she went well beyond her job.”

Shannon says, “They just kept showing up. They were all there when he passed and they all came to the funeral. We got so close that we still keep in touch with them.”
A month later, the team even visited the Fergusons at their office to give the family a gift. “They were all grieving too,” Jody says. “They just never said no. They were always there.”
