What’s in the water you use to do your dishes, shower with, drink? Fort Bend County water goes through an intricate cleaning process before it enters your home. It’s safe to drink and work with, but making it that way injects additives that you may prefer not to have in your daily water.
“Using a whole home water filter takes out particles, odors, etc.” says Beau Burkhalter, son of the namesake of Alan’s Plumbing, who has been working with his father at the business since he was just a teen. “There is a large amount of chlorine and chemicals added to water to make it potable drinking and bathing water.”
“Alan’s offers several different options, from a basic filter at the inlet of the home that catches the smell and taste that you find in the water to ‘the best of the best set up’—a five micron pre-filter that then goes through a water softener into the home, and a reverse osmosis system under your kitchen sink for pure and filtered drinking water,” Beau explains.

The water softener makes it feel like it’s supposed to feel on your skin,” Beau continues. “The pre-filter and softener take out a lot of chlorine.”
Beau explains, “Your skin is the body’s largest organ. Showering in untreated water won’t harm your skin but it’s also not helping it. A water softener will not only help preserve your fixtures but it will keep your skin from drying out.”
Beau’s wife, Morgan, advocates for filtered water and water softeners as an important step in her skin and hair care. “We live in an area with really hard water, and I can immediately feel the difference when the softener is on. My skin is softer, my hair is smoother and shinier—the difference is night and day!”
Filtered, soft water also keeps your appliances and fixtures clean and in good working condition. “It helps water heaters, dishwashers, faucets, and washers/dryers last longer without the calcium buildup from heavily treated water,” Beau continues. “With a water softener, your dishes, glass shower doors, etc. won’t have a calcium film.”
Water filters and softeners require regular maintenance—“the pre-filter generally needs to be changed every eight to 10 months,” Beau says. “We offer maintenance plans to help with the upkeep.”
Depending on which filter system is chosen, installation can take from four hours to all day. “But it’s always worth it,” Beau concludes. “The feedback has been great. 100% of our clients notice a difference in their water.”
