Are You Throwing Money Down the Drain?

by Sarah Warburton

Do you ever feel like money is just running through your fingers? Maybe it’s running down your drains! A little leak here or there can make a huge difference on your water bill! We asked the experts at Alan’s Plumbing to crunch the numbers, so you can see what a big difference a little wasted water can make!

A leaky toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water a day. So if your toilet keeps running and running, it’s more than a nuisance…it’s actually costing you about $70 a month! How bad can a leaky faucet really be? Well, a slow drip can waste about 7-10 gallons of water per day, adding up to more than 3,600 gallons of water per year. This simple small leak can cost you about $20 per year. A more significant faucet leak can produce 30 to hundreds of gallons of wasted water per day. The average costs of these fast dripping faucets will end up costing you $60 to $200 per year. And what about those drips you never notice like the one by your cracked hose bib? If you add up all the little things…the total could cost you a lot of cash!

Why should you care about more water-efficient fixtures? Sometimes they can make it difficult to replace your old fixtures. Alan, Zach, Chris, Luke and Beau are always happy to answer questions when you call them for a plumbing job. One of their favorite tips is to take a picture of the fixture you’d like to replace with your phone, so you can get an exact match and have it ready when they show up. That’s thinking ahead to save money! They can also help you get set up with aerators on your plumbing fixtures, low flow shower heads that give you maximum spray while conserving water, or low flow toilets.

Keep an eye on your water usage numbers each month and if you see an unexplained jump in your bill, call Alan’s Plumbing. Be smart and save money with Alan’s Plumbing…for all your plumbing problems.
