For Thirteen Years, I’d Never Been Able to Climb a Flight of Stairs

“For Thirteen Years, I’d Never Been Able to Climb a Flight of Stairs”
~No matter your age you can return to an active lifestyle with the right help!~

In August of 2012, ninety-four-year-old Dorothy Graham weighed 255 pounds. She says, “I had diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, thyroid trouble, and congestive heart failure…and I couldn’t walk. When my cardiologist Dr. Redding started me on a diet, I literally changed my entire way of life and I lost nearly one hundred pounds. When I needed rehab after a stay at the University Hospital, there was only one place I wanted to go…but I didn’t know it was called the HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Sugar Land!”

“I’d had a wonderful experience there five years ago, but the name had changed. My daughter tracked it down! After I was transferred, I knew I was in the right place! They were so nice and took really good care of me. I was worried about staying on my diet, but the dietician at HealthSouth was so accommodating and everyone went out of their way to find options that would work.”

“I could only walk a little bit, but I was rarin’ to go. When my lovely PT asked about my goals, I told her I’d never been able to walk up the stairs to see my thirteen-year-old great-granddaugher’s bedroom. They took me to an exit and we went up and down the stairs together! Before HealthSouth, whenever my daughter took me to the doctor, she had to push my wheelchair up a ramp…and she’s 73 with a bad shoulder. The first time I told her I’d go up the steps myself, she was shocked…and I was so proud!”

“Now I take Spanish and play Bingo every day at the TC Harman Center, the senior activity center…and I’m the oldest person there! I’m also writing a book to show you’re never too old to change your life with the help of good doctors and places like HealthSouth. If they sold memberships like a gym, I’d be at HealthSouth everyday!”

Nick Hardin, CEO of HealthSouth Sugar Land, says “Success stories like Mrs. Graham’s are why I’m in this field. On my desk I have a photo of my three-year-old son listening with a stethoscope to the head of my six-month-old son…and I hope I’m teaching them that nothing in life is more rewarding than caring for others!”
