It’s back-to-school time! In between school supply and new shoe runs, don’t forget to schedule your child’s dental exam. Schedule it for summer and your child will miss just one day during the upcoming school year for dentist visits!
Why are dental exams important for kids?
Tooth decay is one of the most common dental conditions in children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 46% of children aged 2-19 years have experienced tooth decay (cavities). Often, children do not brush properly, which can lead to dental problems, and many children are intimidated by dental visits, so they may be hesitant to share that they are experiencing tooth pain. This can significantly affect their classwork and ability to eat.
At Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, founder and owner Dr. Faisal Khan has a gentle touch. Children love him and are comfortable with him and his staff. “Kids are my whole life,” says Dr. Khan. “They’re so much fun. Every patient is different … children keep things exciting and fast-paced. My own kids, Zayna, Hamza, and Eisa, visit the office all the time. They love talking to the employees, and they help out by making goody bags and shredding papers. My life outside the office is hanging with the three of them. We are Marvel junkies!”
With expert dental care, cavities and other dental problems can be easily identified and treated in their early stages. Statistics show that dental problems can affect a student’s ability to concentrate and that students with dental problems miss more school.
“Even if your child’s teeth seem to be in good condition, they should still be seen by an experienced pediatric dentist.” Dr. Khan continues. “A comprehensive exam helps dentists to monitor or identify any problems with teeth development.”
How to Keep Your Child’s Teeth Healthy In Between Visits
Frequently change your child’s frayed toothbrush because the bristles are more abrasive and ineffective in cleaning the teeth and removing plaque along your child’s gum line. As you stock up on school supplies, don’t forget to include several toothbrushes. Toothbrushes should be changed every three months or immediately after recovering from an illness.
“Adhere to the 2×2 Rule with your children every day,” Dr. Khan adds. “Brush twice daily for two minutes. This will help keep your kid’s teeth healthier between visits.”
Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik, Dr. Annie Zheng, Dr. Khadija Khan, as well as an oral surgeon, and an anesthesiologist, join Dr. Khan at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental to provide all aspects of pediatric dentistry, special needs dentistry, and minor orthodontics. “Everyone here is so hard working,” says Dr. Khan. “As a team, we all really care for our patients!”
