Dr. Ekpedeme Wade spent several years in traditional Family Medicine before realizing what she really loved was helping people on a deeper level with their mental health. So, in a time of uncertainty and concern – a time that most people would call a terrible time to open a business – she opened her doors in 2020. It was the uncertainty that made her business successful. “Anxiety and discomfort increased in our world. I just wanted to provide a space where everyone in Fort Bend can see themselves and be comfortable with themselves,” she explains. “2020 was the perfect time to do that.”
A Christian, Dr. Wade thoughtfully chose the name Twelve Two Christian Counseling. The Bible verse said everything she wanted to convey with her business. “We focus on transforming minds. Our business name is actually our business motto!” Dr. Wade says.
If you’ve been in Fort Bend County long, you’re probably familiar with the Brooks Street homes in Sugar Land, with their unique connection to the Imperial Sugar Company. They date back to 1920 when they were built to house sugar refinery employees. The cozy red brick home with its big oak tree in the front yard and plenty of airy light inside was just the perfect place to house Dr. Wade’s office.
“I went to Kempner High School and still live in Fort Bend County,” Dr. Wade says. She and her husband of 18 years are raising their two teenagers here. “I love the diversity of Fort Bend for my practice, but also for my children. They have friends from all different backgrounds and eat all kinds of foods. They get a great academic education and a great life education.”
Perhaps the most popular member of their family is Smokey, the therapy dog. The English Teddybear Goldendoodle loves to greet clients in the office, with his handler, Dr. Wade, nearby. Since Dr. Wade is an MD, she is able to prescribe medication, which can make things easier for her clients.
“Taking your first step takes a lot of courage,” Dr. Wade says. “When you call during office hours, you’ll always reach a soothing, caring person who will take the time to walk through the process with you.”
