Challenging Disabilities, Changing Lives

by Amy Sharp

That’s the motto of the National Rehabilitation Awareness Foundation, sponsor of this month’s National Rehabilitation Awareness Celebration (Rehab Week). And our neighbors at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Sugar Land have reason to celebrate!

“Rehabilitation is all we do, “ says Nick Hardin, CEO of HealthSouth, “We have an amazing, state of the art, 50 bed in-patient hospital that provides a wide range of physical rehabilitation services, occupational therapy, neurological services, a vast network of highly-skilled, independent private practice physicians and HealthSouth therapists and nurses, and the most innovative equipment and rehabilitation technology available. Our patients enjoy flat screen televisions, telephones and wireless internet capabilities.”

“But what I’m most proud of,” continues Nick, “is our staff and their commitment to quality care. Comfort, professionalism and respect…those are our cornerstones of care. It doesn’t matter if a patient is interacting with a one of our doctors or a member of our housekeeping staff, every patient and every visitor here can expect to receive comfort, professionalism and respect throughout their experience.”

And the effort of the team has not gone unnoticed. HealthSouth Sugarland holds a  certification with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare (JCAHO) for Disease Specific Accreditation for Stroke and Hip Fractures. The Joint Commission is the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care, and Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. The on-site review includes assessments of how clinical outcomes and performance measures are used to find opportunities for improved care, assessment of an organization’s leadership commitment to improvement and the way in which patients are educated with respect to self-management. Nick says, “All of our disciplines really have to pull together as a team to earn this accreditation. It’s another indication of how every member of our HealthSouth team works to create a culture of caring that’s ideal for the patients…and those who care for them!”

“Challenging disabilities, changing lives…we are doing it here one patient at a time,” says Nick, “Our range of care includes an amputee program, an arthritis program, and rehabilitation for those who suffered a brain injury, hip fracture, joint replacement, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, stroke, or multi-trauma. Our physicians, therapists, patients, their families and other members of their care team work together to develop comprehensive, individualized, and cost-effective treatment plans to restore and strengthen the patient…so they can return to their highest level of independence. We change lives for the better…helping patients live up to their fullest potential!”
