Even Better Than Time Travel!

Even Better Than Time Travel!

Why is a trip to Columbus, Texas even better than traveling back in time? You can bring your cell phone, your car is safer than some crazy contraption, and you won’t have to worry about accidentally changing the future. In fact, the Columbus Folk Fest is safe enough for the whole family…and it’s a tons of fun!

Ready for a a gun-slingin’ good time? Step back into a time when Texas was young and fighting for its independence. The first first Folk Fest was held in Columbus, Texas in 1872 to “showcase the town’s role in the fight for Texas’ independence.”  Thrill to the battles of the Texas Revolution and enjoy a street dance. At Pioneer Camp you can hear the sweeter sounds of history with period music from the Tejas Pioneers, whose members dressed in costume play “authentic music of early Texas…songs of the pioneers in the early days, patriotic music of the mid-19th century…and authentic cowboy songs.”

Does the thought of all that excitement make you want to swoon? For something more refined, the The Columbus Historic Preservation Trust offers their iconic homes and museums’ “Magnolia Homes Tour” and “Architecture Tour,” including buildings like Alley Log Cabin and Antique Tool Museum and the Stafford Opera House, the only flat-floored Texas opera house still in existence. You can also find Southern Belles under the historic live oaks at the “Magnolia Belles” and “Miss Columbus” pageant.

We’ve got plenty of wide open spaces and fresh air in Texas. Plein Air painting is a traditional outdoors style of painting. In the “Columbus Paint-Out”, participating artists will have two weeks to paint century old live oaks, historic buildings or other subjects within the Columbus area. You’ll get to view these paintings at the Plein Art Competition, as well as an exhibit of photographs of Columbus’ celebrated Live Oak Trees by the Live Oak Photography Club.

Taste a little more Texas with treats from food vendors or the biergarten, play a game of washer or horseshoes, sample some activities just for the kiddos…and don’t forget to sign up for the “Live Oaks and Dead Folks” cemetery tour. This is one three-day celebration that’s been over a hundred years in the making. Now that’s a lot of time to travel!

The annual Columbus Folk Festival will take place at Beason’s Park on November 1-3, 2013.
