Getting Back in the Game

Houston Methodist Sugar LandThe all-star team at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine helps professional athletes and weekend warriors regain mobility and a life without pain.

Former Houston Astro, Kevin Bass was an all-star outfielder who could do it all – hit, run and field. But 14 years in the big leagues took a toll on his body, and he realized it was time to do something about his aching shoulder.

Bass chose Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Sugar Land to see Mark Maffet, M.D., board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine expert. Maffet realized immediately that Bass would need surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff on his non-throwing shoulder.

“Dr. Maffet told me that when he got inside my shoulder, it was pretty mangled,” says Bass. “Just the result of wear and tear from my playing days.”

Houston Methodist Sugar Land“My experience was awesome, and I now have a great appreciation for how skilled Dr. Maffet is,” says Bass. “Everyone at the hospital was A+, and I was made to feel very comfortable throughout the process. I highly recommend Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and Dr. Maffet.”

As a former professional athlete, Bass knew he could trust Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine with his care. After all, Houston Methodist Hospital is the official health care provider for the Houston Astros as well as the Houston Texans, Houston Dynamo, Rodeo Houston, Houston Dash, and Houston Ballet.

But you don’t have to be a Major Leaguer to benefit from the skill and expertise available at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.

The practice includes 13 experienced, board-certified physicians, along with specially trained physical therapy staff who work hand-in-hand with the doctors to develop and implement personalized rehabilitation plans.

The center’s orthopedic surgeons are supported by a highly skilled operating room staff, including registered nurses and surgical technicians.

And now, Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine has a new home – a recently opened state-of-the-art facility on the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus at the corner of Highway 59 and Sweetwater Boulevard.

The 75,000-square-foot center includes office and patient care space for Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine’s board-certified and fellowship-trained physicians and surgeons, along with dedicated areas for physical and occupational therapy, which include an indoor batting cage and golf net; an indoor pool with built-in treadmill for aquatic therapy; an anti-gravity treadmill; and an outdoor, 40 x 20-yard turf training field for athletes recovering from injury.

“With our new facility, we’ve brought together all of our resources in a comfortable, convenient setting that provides a wealth of benefits to our patients,” says Maffet. “This building is a definite home run.”

On-site physical, occupational and aquatic therapy plays a major role in helping both athletes and non-athletes recover from injuries or surgery. Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine staff includes some of the region’s most accomplished and respected therapists.

In fact, Bass credits his board-certified and fellowship-trained physical therapist at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Ben Renfrow, with helping him recover quickly after surgery and regain the full use of his shoulder.

“I can’t say enough about Ben,” says Bass. “He was so intuitive and extremely caring. He answered every question I had, and it was clear he really understood my injury and how to help me recover properly. I’m happy to say that I’m back to full strength!”
