One man is marching to the beat of his own drum and making noise at Fort Bend Music Center’s Sugar Land and Houston locations. President of Fort Bend Music Center, Rick Cochran says, “We’re delighted to introduce Craig Latson, our Music Education Director. An ordained deacon with an MA in Theology as well as a music instructor with a BA in Business and MBA, Craig was a bandleader in middle school, and a drum major in high school and college, playing in the marching band and the orchestra. We love his knowledge, his experience, and his enthusiasm…the joy he takes in music is impossible to resist!”
.
Right now Craig is busy planning for Fort Bend Music Center’s Summer Camp. He says, “We offer a one hour a day, five-day option for 4-6 year-olds and their parents. During this camp, kids will play piano, learn rhythm, develop their music appreciation…and have fun! Older kids get the full music experiences–two and a half hours a day, five days in a row for ages 7-9, 10-12, 13-19, and ages 20+ (mom and dad, this could be you!) Each day will feature a half hour lesson in piano, brass, guitar, percussion, and voice. That’s like getting your first month of instruction in five different musical areas…all in a one-week camp for $150!”
.
“Brass is new to our camps this year and this is the first year we have a camp for adults, my personal specialty. At the Houston location I personally have fifty students…forty of them are adults and the oldest is 89. I tell all our students, old and young: You only need one thing in order to play music…desire. If you have the desire, we’ll teach you to play. When music brings you joy, you’ll want to do it for the rest of your life!”
.
The fun doesn’t end when summer camps are over. At Sugar Land, you can sign up for group beginner lessons in the fall with Renee Massey, Lessons Desk Manager or Lindsey Cochran. Craig especially recommends the piano, saying, “That’s one instrument where you gain mastery of reading both the treble and the bass clef, rhythm, using your hands, eyes, ears, and feet, and can play solo, as an ensemble, or improvise. It’s the whole package!”
.
Fort Bend Music Summer Camps fill up quickly…so call or come by to reserve your spot! While you’re there, check out the range of pianos (both new and pre-owned) for sale, bring your instruments in for repairs, and marvel at the full range of services and products available. Ashley Cochran, Accounts Manager says, “Visit our Facebook page for information on open mic nights, music workshops, and screenings of “music-themed movies”…all free and open to the community! There’s always something new and jazzy going on!”
