Busy bees all over our community are getting ready for the 5th Annual Great Grown Up Spelling Bee on September 18, 2014, at the University of Houston-Sugar Land, 14000 University Blvd., from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. If you’re looking for a F-U-N team building opportunity, a G-R-E-A-T way to build community, and a L-I-V-E-L-Y night out, this is a can’t-miss event. Watch as your friends, family, or colleagues show off their spelling skills and compete for a spot in the “Honey Hall of Fame.”

What’s the BUZZ? The Spelling Bee raises funds for the Literacy Council of Fort Bend to change lives through adult education. Last year the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County raised over $18,000 for Literacy in the 4th Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee. Through generous contributions from our community and the dedication of students and their tutors, the Literacy Council of Fort Bend is proud to announce that in 2013: 99% of ESL students’ test scores improved and 46% of those advanced to a higher proficiency level; 12 students became US citizens through Citizenship Classes; and 20 GED students reported they had obtained their GED. Participate in the mission of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend…and you too can BEE a champion of literacy!

Are you still stung by the memory of grade school spelling defeats? Don’t miss the chance to earn the B-R-A-G-G-A-D-O-C-I-O rights as one of the “Best Grown-Up Spellers in Fort Bend County.” Gather together two more of your friends and enter a team of three, Bee a Word Sponsor, sponsor a letter of the Alphabet, or Bee a Spectator. Kelli Metzenthin, the Executive Director of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend, says, “We have a range of sponsorship opportunities as well as ‘Bee Team Enhancers’ like Spell-Agains, Mulligans, and Stingers (passing a hard word to another team) that will add extra zing to the competition.”
