When Steve and Melissa May decided to re-do their two upstairs bathrooms, life issues got in the way. He wanted geologically interesting stone, she preferred glass, art and keepsakes. They tried pulling the pieces together themselves from the gazillion options, but it was just too boggling. The one thing they knew…they both love the water. Melissa says, “I purchased two tile murals on Ebay…we had to start somewhere. These became the anchors for each design–one riverine and the other oceanic.”
After reading about the Re-Modelista in a local publication, Melissa gave Teri Gilberg a call. Melissa says, “Unlike past vendors, Teri and lead contractor Hector showed up on time. Both were easy to work with and very professional…and listened to our out-of-the-box ideas. As just examples, I wanted a medicine cabinet fronted with a picture frame to house changeable art (www.concealedcabinet.com) and my husband wanted a linen closet that didn’t even exist. But Teri was amenable, sent her detailed bid and we embarked on this adventure!”
“We were new to this,” continues Melissa, “but Teri held our hands throughout the worry and frenzy. We had already decided that the murals were to be ‘framed’ with travertine chair rails and had colors picked. These pre-decisions greatly informed the subsequent shopping sprees with Teri. She helped us pick and coordinate everything else and assisted in making money-saving decisions. When the precut marble we had selected was unavailable, we purchased an entire slab that was on sale due to minor damage…and then used some of the leftover to frame the mirrors. Oil rubbed bronze shower hardware was purchased from Amazon.com at a fraction of local cost. The original mirrors were trimmed in lieu of purchasing new. Whenever we weren’t sure of our decisions, Teri insured us that it would all be okay. If we didn’t like it, they would take care of it.”
“From start to finish, it became a bit like having extended family trooping in and out, sharing their laughter and wisdom over bottles of water, coffee, kolaches, crawfish or sugar-free popsicles,” says Melissa. “And we are very happy with the results. It isn’t a million dollar re-do, but a reasonable endeavor to achieve a beautiful finale. On time, within budget–but so much more!”
